What is the currency of Mexico?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. Its ISO 4217 code is MXN, and it is divided into 100 centavos.

The word peso means “weight” in Spanish and originally referred to substantial silver coins used throughout the Spanish Empire. Mexico’s first mint was established in 1535, helping Mexican silver pesos become important international trade coins across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

The modern peso underwent a major revaluation in 1993, when Mexico introduced the nuevo peso at a rate of 1 new peso for 1,000 old pesos. The word “nuevo” was later dropped, but the MXN code remains. The dollar sign ($) is also used for pesos, so prices are sometimes written as Mex$ to avoid confusion with the U.S. dollar.
