What is the currency of Australia?

The story behind the answer

What is the currency of Australia? The Australian dollar. It is Australia’s official currency and legal tender, and its international currency code is AUD. Prices are commonly written with the dollar sign, often as A$ or AU$ when it is important to distinguish the currency from other dollars.

The Australian dollar was introduced on 14 February 1966, replacing the Australian pound. Australia converted from a pounds-shillings-pence system to decimal currency, with one dollar divided into 100 cents. The conversion rate was two Australian dollars to one Australian pound.

The Reserve Bank of Australia issues the country’s banknotes, while circulating coins are produced by the Royal Australian Mint. Australian notes use polymer rather than traditional paper, a system introduced with the $10 note in 1988 and later extended across the series.

The Australian dollar is also legal tender in Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu, where it circulates alongside, or effectively serves as, the local currency. It should not be confused with the New Zealand dollar or Fiji dollar, which are separate Pacific currencies.
