The adidas Superstar’s rubber toe shell is commonly called the “shell toe.”
The Superstar began as a low-top basketball shoe in the late 1960s and was distinguished by its molded rubber toe cap. That protective section has a ridged, shell-like texture, which led to the familiar nickname “shell toe.” The term is widely used in sneaker and streetwear discussion.
The shoe later became strongly associated with hip-hop and casual fashion, especially after Run-DMC wore adidas footwear and helped bring sneakers into mainstream music culture. The Superstar’s three stripes, leather upper, and shell toe made it easy to recognize even outside sporting contexts.
“Shell toe” describes the toe construction, not the official name of the shoe. It is also different from “cupsole,” which refers to a type of outsole construction used on many sneakers. Because the Superstar is sometimes discussed alongside adidas’s Stan Smith, another iconic low-top, it is useful to remember that the shell toe is the defining physical feature of the Superstar.
