Sabrett is the common New York City hot-dog brand owned by Marathon Enterprises.
The Sabrett name is especially associated with New York’s ubiquitous hot-dog carts, although the carts themselves are generally independently owned. Sabrett frankfurters are sold through street vendors, supermarkets, club stores, and other food-service outlets across the New York metropolitan area.
The business traces its roots to Samuel Ogus and Fritz Frankel, who operated a bakery and began making hot dogs as demand for inexpensive frankfurters grew during the 1930s. The brand name evolved from an attempted “Sabre” name, with “Sabrett” suggesting a small saber. Marathon acquired the business in 1989 and retained the Sabrett name.
A common mix-up is Nathan’s Famous, another strongly identified New York hot-dog brand. Nathan’s is associated with Coney Island, while Sabrett is particularly recognizable from its yellow-and-blue carts and its distinctive red-and-blue branding. Sabrett also sells condiments such as sauerkraut, relish, mustard, and onions in tomato sauce.
