Iceland’s Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur was founded in 1937.
The Reykjavík hot dog business began when Jón Sveinsson established its first stand on Austurstræti in central Reykjavík. The family operation later became associated with Guðrún Björk Kristmundsdóttir, under whose leadership it expanded beyond the original location. In the 1960s, the business moved to Tryggvagata, where its flagship stand remains.
The 1937 date is sometimes confused with later milestones, such as the brand’s international fame or its 2004 celebrity visit from Bill Clinton. Bæjarins Beztu’s hot dogs are made from a blend based on lamb, pork, and beef, reflecting Icelandic food traditions. Customers can add ketchup, sweet mustard, remoulade, raw onion, and crisp fried onion; ordering “eina með öllu,” or “one with everything,” is the classic choice.
