The first pølsevogne in Denmark entered the streets of Aarhus in 1917.
This date marks the beginning of Denmark’s organized sausage-wagon tradition. Aarhus, one of Denmark’s major cities and the largest urban center in Jutland, received the first pølsevogne before the concept spread to the capital and other parts of the country.
Copenhagen’s first six pølsevogne arrived later, on 18 January 1921, which is a common source of confusion. Because Copenhagen became especially associated with Danish hot dog culture, people sometimes incorrectly identify it as the birthplace of the wagons. The stands traditionally sold sausages and hot dogs with condiments such as strong mustard, ketchup, Danish remoulade, onions, and pickles. Their success helped establish the pølsevogn as a recognizable Danish street-food institution.
