What is the code name for the 2024+ seventh-generation Ford Mustang?

The story behind the answer

The code name for the 2024-and-newer seventh-generation Ford Mustang is S650.

Ford uses internal program codes to distinguish Mustang generations. The seventh-generation car is designated S650, following the sixth-generation S550 and fifth-generation S197. It entered production in 2023 as a 2024 model, continuing assembly at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

S650 is a development designation, not a trim level or engine name. The generation launched with the redesigned 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and an updated 5.0-liter Coyote V8. Ford also introduced the Dark Horse as a performance-oriented model positioned between the regular GT and the more specialized Shelby-era cars.

The alternatives belong to earlier Mustangs: SN95 identifies the fourth generation, S197 the fifth, and S550 the sixth. Those codes are easy to confuse because Ford retained the Mustang name and familiar rear-wheel-drive layout across all three. The S650 nevertheless brought major electronic, interior, chassis, and styling updates while preserving the Mustang’s basic formula.
