What is the capital of the Marshall Islands?
Answer
Majuro
Answer
Majuro
Majuro is the capital of the Marshall Islands, a country made up largely of low-lying coral atolls in the central Pacific.
Majuro is both an atoll and the country’s principal population and administrative center. It consists of narrow strips of land surrounding a broad lagoon, with the main urban area concentrated across the connected motus of Delap, Uliga, and Djarrit. Government offices, the national legislature, businesses, schools, and the main international airport are located there.
Majuro became the capital after the Marshall Islands separated from the Federated States of Micronesia and formed the Republic of the Marshall Islands in 1978. It replaced Jaluit, which had previously served as an important administrative center.
The wrong options are capitals of other Pacific island countries: Ngerulmud is Palau’s capital, Tarawa is associated with Kiribati, and Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia. Majuro’s atoll geography also makes it especially vulnerable to sea-level rise.
