What is the capital city of Rohan?

The story behind the answer

The capital city of Rohan was Edoras. Built on a hill at the northern foot of the White Mountains, Edoras served as the royal seat of the Kings of Rohan and the political heart of the Rohirrim kingdom.

The city was founded by Brego, the second King of Rohan, around the middle of the Third Age. Before Edoras became the capital, Eorl the Young and his people were based at Aldburg in the Folde. Edoras’s exposed hill and surrounding grasslands made it a fitting centre for a horse-lord culture, while its position near the mountains offered strategic advantages.

At the summit stood Meduseld, the golden hall of the king. It was the home of Théoden and the setting for the Fellowship’s tense meeting with the king after Gandalf arrived to break Saruman’s influence over him. The hall’s name means “Golden Hall,” so Meduseld is the royal palace, not the city itself.

Another common mistake is naming Minas Tirith, which is the capital of Gondor. Edoras belongs to Rohan, while Gondor’s chief city is Minas Tirith.
