Edoras is the capital city of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Edoras stands on a hill in the valley of Harrowdale, beneath the White Mountains. It is the seat of the Kings of Rohan and the location of Meduseld, the king’s golden hall. When Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrive there, Théoden is king and Gríma Wormtongue has influence over him.
The city’s name comes from Tolkien’s invented languages and is associated with an enclosed settlement or dwelling place. Its position reflects Rohan’s role as a horse-rearing kingdom: the Rohirrim live in a broad land of grasslands, while Edoras serves as their political center.
Edoras is not Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. The two cities are allied but belong to separate realms. In the story, the Rohirrim later ride from Edoras toward the defense of Gondor.
