What is the capital city of Mongolia?

Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia.

The city stands in the Tuul River valley in north-central Mongolia, at an elevation of roughly 1,350 metres. It is by far Mongolia's largest urban centre and the country's main political, economic and cultural hub.

Ulaanbaatar began as a mobile Buddhist monastery founded in 1639. The settlement moved many times before permanently settling at its present location in 1778. Its earlier name, Urga, was commonly used in English and other European languages.

The modern name means “Red Hero” in Mongolian and was adopted in 1924 after Mongolia became a socialist republic. The city is known for its severe winters, with temperatures sometimes falling below −30 degrees Celsius. The nearby Genghis Khan Statue Complex commemorates Mongolia's most famous historical figure.
