What is the British version of Dragon's Den adapted from?

The story behind the answer

The British version of Dragon's Den is adapted from the Japanese programme Money Tigers.

Money Tigers established the central format: entrepreneurs seek funding from wealthy businesspeople by offering a share of their company. The British adaptation retained that structure while replacing the original panel and presentation with a British setting, British businesses and its own television style.

The international success of this concept shows how a simple format can travel across cultures. The essential ingredients are easy to understand anywhere: a founder explains a product or service, requests a specific investment, names the equity offered and responds to detailed questions from potential investors.

Shark Tank is a related American business-pitch series, but it is not the source programme for Britain's Dragon's Den. The names differ by territory because broadcasters adapt the format for local audiences. Confusing the two American and British titles is common, especially because both programmes use investor panels and entrepreneur pitches.
