What is the British television business programme Dragon's Den adapted from?

The story behind the answer

The British television business programme Dragon's Den is adapted from the Japanese format Money Tigers.

Money Tigers was a Japanese television programme in which entrepreneurs presented business ideas to wealthy potential investors. That basic structure became the foundation for Dragon's Den in Britain and for several related international adaptations.

The British title uses “dragons” for its investors, while the underlying concept is often described as a pitch-and-investment format. The name is therefore not evidence that the show originated in the United Kingdom.

A frequent mix-up is Shark Tank, the American adaptation of the same broad format. Shark Tank is a separate national version, whereas Money Tigers is the Japanese programme credited as the source of the format used by Dragon's Den.
