What is the Black Speech of Mordor used for in J.R.R. Tolkien’s One Ring inscription?
Answer
The Ring’s inscription
Answer
The Ring’s inscription
The Black Speech of Mordor is used for the inscription on J.R.R. Tolkien’s One Ring.
The inscription consists of two lines from a longer rhyme describing the Rings of Power: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” The letters appear on the Ring when it is heated.
Tolkien wrote the inscription in the Tengwar script, but the language is the Black Speech created for Mordor. This distinction is important: a script is a writing system, while a language is the linguistic form being written. The visible letters therefore do not make the inscription an Elvish-language text.
The Black Speech was devised by Sauron for the servants of Mordor. Tolkien gives relatively little surviving material in that language, making the Ring inscription one of its best-known examples. The inscription’s meaning reveals the Ring’s purpose and its connection to the other Rings of Power.
