What is Shrek’s surname in the Shrek film franchise?

The story behind the answer

Shrek has no established surname in the Shrek film franchise.

The character is consistently identified simply as Shrek. Official film dialogue, credits, merchandise, and published character descriptions do not give him a family name, so additions such as “Shrek Ogre” are inventions rather than canon.

Shrek is an ogre who lives alone in a swamp at the beginning of the first film. His isolation changes after Lord Farquaad’s expulsion of fairy-tale creatures brings Donkey to his home and sends Shrek on the rescue mission that leads to his relationship with Princess Fiona.

The lack of a surname is common for the franchise’s fairy-tale figures. Characters such as Donkey, Dragon, and Gingy are also primarily known by descriptive or single names, while royal titles such as Princess Fiona identify status rather than a family surname.
