What is Pokémon Pokopia's setting based on?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Pokopia is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Kanto.

The game presents a world abandoned by humans and made difficult for Pokémon to inhabit. The player must help restore habitats and make the landscape livable again, turning environmental recovery into the central gameplay loop.

Kanto connects Pokopia to the setting of the first Pokémon games, but this is not the familiar populated region from Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. Pokopia reimagines it after a major collapse and uses the altered landscape as the basis for its building systems.

The story gradually explains that humanity left Earth for outer space after unexplained phenomena made the environment inhospitable. Pokémon were left behind in a computer system designed to preserve them.
