What is Madden NFL 27’s new defensive control that maps right-stick directions to tackle types?

The story behind the answer

Madden NFL 27’s new defensive control that maps right-stick directions to tackle types is the Tackle Stick.

The system gives defenders four directional options without requiring players to leave the right stick. Pushing up performs a Hit Stick, down performs a Cut Stick, left performs a Lunge Tackle, and right performs a Wrap Tackle.

EA Sports introduced the Tackle Stick as part of Madden NFL 27’s tackling overhaul. Its goal is to make open-field defense more responsive while giving users more control over the kind of contact they attempt. The result depends on factors such as pursuit angle, momentum, player ratings, size and positioning.

The Tackle Stick does not replace every defensive tackle input. Strip-ball, dive and conservative tackles still use button controls. It is also distinct from the Hit Stick: the Hit Stick is one tackle option within the broader Tackle Stick system, not the name of the entire directional control scheme. Madden NFL is EA Sports’ long-running American football series based on the National Football League.
