What is J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional sword called after Bilbo Baggins finds it?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional sword Sting is the blade Bilbo Baggins finds in the trolls’ hoard. Bilbo later gives the sword to Frodo, who carries it during the quest to destroy the One Ring.

Sting is small compared with the swords used by warriors such as Aragorn or Thorin, making it suitable for a hobbit. Despite its size, it is an ancient Elvish blade from Gondolin. Its most famous magical property is that it glows blue when Orcs or goblins are near.

The name is also part of the story’s character humor: Bilbo calls the sword Sting because it is small to him but formidable against giant spiders. Glamdring and Orcrist are the other two famous blades found in the trolls’ cave, while Narsil is the sword of Elendil. These names refer to separate weapons.
