What is Father's Day called in South Korea, where fathers and mothers are honored together?

The story behind the answer

South Korea calls the joint celebration of fathers and mothers Parents' Day. It is observed annually on May 8 rather than separating Father's Day and Mother's Day into two national occasions.

The Korean name is Eoreon nal, commonly translated as Parents' Day. Children traditionally express gratitude to both parents through cards, gifts, flowers, and family activities. Carnations are especially associated with the occasion.

South Korea previously observed Mother's Day, but the government changed the official name to Parents' Day in 1973. The change reflected the idea that both parents should be honored equally on one date.

Parents' Day is distinct from Children's Day, which South Korea observes on May 5. The two holidays occur close together in the calendar but honor different generations.
