Ecuador’s traditional Indigenous festival honoring the sun around the June solstice is called Inti Raymi.
Inti Raymi means “Festival of the Sun” in Quechua. In Ecuador, it is associated with Indigenous Andean communities and the June solstice, when celebrations may include music, dance, ritual, processions, and communal food. The festival reflects the importance of the sun in Andean agricultural and spiritual traditions.
The same name is especially famous for the large modern celebration in Cusco, Peru, held on June 24. That Peruvian event is connected with the Inca tradition and is staged at locations including Sacsayhuamán, but Ecuadorian observances are separate local expressions of Andean heritage.
Because the name is shared across the Andes, “Inti Raymi” should be identified with its country or community when discussing a specific event.
