Macadamia is the common name for nuts from trees in the genus Macadamia, which is native to northeastern New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. The names “Queensland nut” and “bush nut” reflect the plant’s Australian origin and its traditional role as bush food for Aboriginal peoples.

Two species are especially important commercially: Macadamia integrifolia, commonly called the smooth-shelled macadamia, and Macadamia tetraphylla, the rough-shelled or prickly macadamia. The edible part is the seed inside an exceptionally hard shell, which is why commercial nuts are usually sold shelled or with a scored shell.

A common mix-up is treating “macadamia” as the name of one single species. It is actually a genus containing four species, although only two dominate cultivation. Hawaii helped establish large-scale commercial production after Australian seeds arrived there in the 1880s; South Africa later became a leading producer.
