Answer
Paul McGinley
Paul McGinley was the winning captain of Europe in the 2014 Ryder Cup. His European team defeated the United States 16–11 at Gleneagles in Scotland from September 26–28, 2014.
McGinley became the first Irishman to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup. He had already represented Europe as a player in 2002, 2004 and 2006, winning each time, and served as a vice-captain in 2010 and 2012. His appointment reflected his experience and reputation within the European team structure.
The 2014 contest was Europe’s third consecutive Ryder Cup victory. Rory McIlroy, Sergio García, Martin Kaymer and other leading players formed a strong team, while Tom Watson captained the United States. Europe built a commanding lead in the team matches and secured the cup before the final singles were complete.
The Ryder Cup is a biennial match-play competition between teams from Europe and the United States. Unlike regular golf tournaments, players compete for team points in formats including foursomes, four-ball and singles.
