Quenya is the invented language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the Elves of Valinor.
Quenya is an Elvish language associated especially with the High Elves, or Ñoldor and Vanyar, who lived in Valinor. Tolkien based much of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also developing its grammar and vocabulary as part of his wider linguistic mythology.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, and it is more commonly spoken in much of Middle-earth during the period of The Lord of the Rings. Quenya therefore should not be treated as the general name for every Elvish language in Tolkien’s work.
Tolkien’s languages were connected to fictional histories, migrations, and relationships between peoples. He often created linguistic material before or alongside stories, making language development a foundation of his world-building rather than a decorative addition.
