What instrument does Tré Cool play in Green Day?

Tré Cool plays drums in Green Day. He is the band’s long-time drummer and is known for an energetic, highly physical style that combines punk-rock speed with sharp fills and comic showmanship.

Cool joined Green Day after the departure of John Kiffmeyer, also known as Al Sobrante. He had already gained experience playing drums in the Lookouts, the punk band associated with Lookout! Records founder Larry Livermore. Cool initially filled in before becoming Green Day’s permanent drummer around 1990.

His drumming is central to the band’s sound on albums such as Kerplunk, Dookie and American Idiot. Onstage, he is often especially noticeable because of his animated performances, but the instrument itself is sometimes confused with Mike Dirnt’s role: Dirnt plays bass guitar, while Billie Joe Armstrong plays lead vocals and guitar.

Cool has also played other instruments in side projects and recordings, but drums are his defining role in Green Day. He is not the band’s bassist, keyboardist or lead guitarist.
