What iconic fountain in Rome features a large baroque basin and a statue of Oceanus?

The story behind the answer

The iconic Rome fountain featuring a large Baroque basin and a central statue of Oceanus is the Trevi Fountain.

Designed primarily by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, the fountain forms the dramatic backdrop of the Palazzo Poli. Oceanus stands in the central niche on a shell-shaped chariot, guided by Tritons with two contrasting sea horses—one calm and one restless.

The fountain marks the terminal point of the Acqua Virgo aqueduct, an ancient water system that began supplying Rome in 19 BC. Its name is linked to the Italian tre vie, meaning “three streets,” referring to the intersection nearby. Much of the fountain is made from travertine quarried near Tivoli.

A common mix-up is the answer Fontana di Trevi: that is simply the fountain’s Italian name, not a different landmark. The Spanish Steps are another famous Roman attraction, while the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is a separate fountain in Piazza Navona.
