What hereditary noble title did Leo Tolstoy hold?
Answer
Count
Answer
Count
Leo Tolstoy held the hereditary noble title of Count. His full formal name was Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, reflecting the Russian aristocratic status into which he was born.
Tolstoy was born in 1828 at Yasnaya Polyana, his family estate in Tula Governorate. Although he belonged to the nobility, much of his later writing criticized social inequality, privilege, violence, and the institutions supporting them.
The title is often rendered as “Count” in English translations, while Russian usage gives the equivalent title “graf.” Tolstoy’s aristocratic background also shaped his firsthand knowledge of estate life and the Russian landed class.
