What flightless wren from Stephens Island, New Zealand, went extinct in 1895?
Answer
Stephens Island wren
Answer
Stephens Island wren
The flightless wren from Stephens Island that went extinct in 1895 was the Stephens Island wren, also called Lyall's wren.
Its scientific name is Traversia lyalli. By the time scientists formally encountered it in 1894, the bird appears to have survived only on Stephens Island in Cook Strait, although it had previously lived across parts of New Zealand. It was a tiny, ground-dwelling passerine unable to fly.
The extinction is often simplified into a story about one lighthouse keeper's cat named Tibbles. In reality, several feral cats were present on the island, and their predation rapidly destroyed the remaining population. Contemporary reports described cats bringing the birds' carcasses to the lighthouse settlement.
The wren was probably gone by the winter of 1895. It should not be confused with the rifleman, New Zealand's smallest living bird, or the bushwren, another New Zealand wren that survived until 1972.
