What colorful North American parrot, the only parrot native to the eastern US, went extinct in 1918?

The story behind the answer

The colorful North American parrot that was the only parrot native to the eastern United States and went extinct in 1918 was the Carolina parakeet.

Carolina parakeets had mostly green plumage, bright yellow heads, and orange-red faces. They lived in large, noisy flocks in forests, swamps, and river valleys across much of the eastern, central, and southern United States, with a range that once reached as far west as Colorado.

Their decline was driven by forest clearing, hunting for feathers, persecution as crop pests, and capture for the pet trade. Their flocking behavior made them especially vulnerable: birds often returned to fallen flock members, allowing hunters to kill many at once. Disease has also been suggested, but the evidence is inconclusive.

The last confirmed wild bird was killed in Florida in 1904. The final captive bird, a male named Incas, died at Cincinnati Zoo on February 21, 1918. The species was formally declared extinct in 1939.
