The film directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd is De-Lovely.
Released in 2004, De-Lovely is a musical biopic about composer and songwriter Cole Porter. Kevin Kline plays Porter, while Ashley Judd portrays his wife, Linda Lee Thomas. The title comes from Porter's song “It's De-Lovely,” one of many songs featured in the film.
The movie traces Porter's life and career, including his marriage, travels, friendships, and work for Broadway and Hollywood. It also uses a distinctive framing device: an angelic figure named Gabriel looks back on Porter's life and asks whether it was worth living. The screenplay was written by Jay Cocks.
De-Lovely premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival before receiving a limited theatrical release. It is sometimes confused with Night and Day, the 1946 Cole Porter biopic starring Cary Grant, but that is a different film. Kline performed much of Porter's music himself, and the soundtrack also includes artists such as Robbie Williams, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, and Diana Krall.
