McDonald’s launched McDonaldland in 1971 as the fictional setting for its branded characters.
McDonaldland was a colorful fantasy world created for advertising and promotions aimed especially at children. Ronald McDonald served as its best-known resident, alongside characters such as Grimace, the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese. The setting gave the characters a shared environment and made separate commercials feel like parts of one recognizable brand universe.
The campaign reflected a broader advertising trend of using recurring fictional worlds to build familiarity and encourage children to recognize a company’s products. McDonaldland also supported toys, restaurant displays, packaging and other promotional material.
McDonaldland is not the same thing as the McDonald’s restaurant chain or a physical theme park. It was primarily an imaginary advertising setting. Some characters changed appearance over time, and several were retired or used less often as McDonald’s marketing strategy evolved.
