Quenya is the fictional language J.R.R. Tolkien developed with major influence from Finnish and other languages.
Tolkien was a professional philologist, and language construction was central to his creative work. Quenya became the ceremonial and literary language of the High Elves in his legendarium. Its sound patterns and grammar were shaped especially by Finnish, while Greek and Latin also influenced aspects of Tolkien’s linguistic imagination.
Quenya is not the same as Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin was associated more closely with the Grey-elves of Middle-earth and became widely spoken among Elves in the stories. Tolkien developed both languages extensively, giving them histories and relationships rather than treating them as collections of invented words.
The name Quenya is often translated as “speech” or connected with the idea of a language. Tolkien continued revising his constructed languages throughout his life, so published forms can differ across texts and editorial editions.
