What fictional city is the main setting of Cyberpunk 2077?

The story behind the answer

The main setting of Cyberpunk 2077 is the fictional city of Night City.

Night City is a densely populated metropolis on the California coast in the alternate future of the Cyberpunk universe. It was founded by Richard Night and later became a major center of corporate power, technology, entertainment, crime, and inequality. The city is located in the Free State of North California but functions with considerable independence.

The game divides Night City into districts with distinct identities. Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Santo Domingo, Pacifica, and the City Center each contain different neighborhoods, factions, architecture, and economic conditions. The Badlands outside the city provide a contrasting desert environment associated with nomads.

Night City is not the same place as a real-world California city, although the game borrows broad regional ideas from California and other American urban landscapes. Its history and geography also appear in earlier Cyberpunk tabletop material, making the city a setting with continuity beyond the video game.
