What famous Route 66 landmark in Amarillo, Texas, consists of ten buried vintage Cadillacs?

The story behind the answer

Cadillac Ranch is the Amarillo, Texas, landmark consisting of ten buried vintage Cadillacs.

The art installation was created in 1974 by the eccentric group known as Ant Farm, with support from local millionaire Stanley Marsh 3. The cars are arranged nose-down in a field west of Amarillo, aligned roughly with the angle of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Visitors are encouraged to add layers of spray paint, making the appearance constantly change.

The installation originally stood closer to Amarillo, but it was moved west in 1997 because urban development had reached the former site. Its new location remains near the historic Route 66 corridor, although the cars are on private land and access is provided for visitors.

Cadillac Ranch is sometimes confused with Carhenge, a Nebraska sculpture made from automobiles. The two installations share an automobile theme, but Cadillac Ranch specifically uses ten buried Cadillacs.
