On the Enhanced Fujita scale, light or minor tornado damage corresponds to EF0.
EF0 is the lowest numbered category on the six-level Enhanced Fujita scale, which runs from EF0 through EF5. It describes estimated three-second wind gusts of about 65–85 miles per hour, or 105–137 kilometers per hour. Typical effects include broken branches, damaged chimneys and roofs, overturned signs, and occasional uprooted shallow-rooted trees.
The scale was introduced in the United States in 2007 as a revision of the original Fujita scale. Ratings are assigned from damage surveys using damage indicators such as homes, trees, poles, and commercial buildings. Despite the wind-speed ranges, the EF scale is fundamentally a damage-based estimate, not a direct measurement of wind inside the tornado.
A common mix-up is treating EF0 as “no damage.” EF0 tornadoes can injure people, damage property, and overturn objects, especially where construction is vulnerable. EF1 is the next category and generally involves moderate damage, including more substantial roof and vehicle impacts.
