What does TMS stand for in logistics management?

The story behind the answer

In logistics management, TMS stands for Transportation Management System.

A TMS is logistics software used to plan, execute, monitor, and analyze freight movements. It can compare carriers and rates, select transportation modes, optimize routes and loads, tender shipments, track deliveries, audit freight invoices, and report performance measures such as cost and on-time delivery. Companies may use it for truckload, parcel, rail, ocean, or air transportation.

Transportation management systems usually connect with other business platforms. An enterprise resource planning system can provide orders, while a warehouse management system can exchange shipment and fulfillment information. The TMS then turns orders into transportation plans and communicates execution details to carriers or logistics providers.

The wording is sometimes confused with “traffic management,” which generally concerns managing road or network movement rather than commercial freight operations. A TMS is also not merely a tracking dashboard: visibility is one function, but planning, procurement, execution, freight payment, and analytics are part of its wider role. Cloud-based software-as-a-service delivery is now common, alongside hosted and on-premises arrangements.
