What does Sam take from Frodo when he thinks that Frodo is dead?

The story behind the answer

When Sam thinks Frodo is dead, he takes the Ring from Frodo and briefly becomes its bearer. Frodo has been paralysed by Shelob’s sting, and Sam believes the spider’s attack has killed him.

Sam initially takes the Ring because he believes the quest must continue. He does not want Frodo’s sacrifice to be meaningless, so he resolves to carry the Ring into Mordor alone. This is one of the clearest demonstrations of Sam’s loyalty and courage, but it also exposes him to the Ring’s corrupting influence.

The Orcs soon arrive and carry Frodo into the tower of Cirith Ungol. Sam overhears them arguing and discovers that Frodo is alive. He then uses the Ring to enter the tower, rescues Frodo, and returns it to him.

Sam’s moment as Ring-bearer is short, but it matters greatly. Unlike many characters who seek power, Sam imagines the Ring’s possibilities only briefly and ultimately rejects its temptation. His love for Frodo and commitment to the mission remain stronger than its promises.
