Answer
Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment
In supply chain collaboration, CPFR stands for Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment.
CPFR is a cooperative approach in which trading partners—commonly manufacturers, distributors, and retailers—share information and coordinate demand planning. Instead of each company creating an isolated forecast, partners compare sales data, inventory levels, promotions, and anticipated orders to build a more consistent view of future demand.
The method emerged in the 1990s from a collaboration involving Walmart and Benchmarking Partners. The initiative was first known as CFAR, or Collaborative Forecasting and Replenishment, before the name changed to CPFR to emphasize joint planning. The Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards Association published its first CPFR guidelines in 1998.
CPFR is more than simply exchanging spreadsheets. Its model includes a joint business plan, sales and order forecasts, exception identification, collaborative resolution of discrepancies, and eventual order generation. The goal is to reduce stockouts, excess inventory, forecast errors, and unnecessary logistics costs. The acronym is sometimes misremembered as “customer” or “centralized” planning, but the opening word is collaborative.
