What does Aragon say before entering the doorway to The Paths of the Dead?

Before entering the Paths of the Dead, Aragorn says, “I do not fear death.” The line captures his resolve as he leads Legolas, Gimli, and the Grey Company into the haunted passage beneath the Dwimorberg.

The Paths of the Dead are connected to an ancient oath. The Men of the Mountains promised to aid Isildur during the struggle against Sauron, then broke that oath. Isildur cursed them to remain restless until the heir of Gondor summoned them and released them from their obligation.

The entrance is marked by a warning that “the way is shut” and that the dead keep it. Aragorn nevertheless enters because he needs their aid against the Corsairs of Umbar and the forces threatening Gondor. A common mix-up is attributing the line to Legolas or confusing it with Éowyn’s separate statement that she fears neither death nor pain. Aragorn’s declaration appears in both Tolkien’s narrative tradition and the film adaptation.
