In the 2007 film The Nanny Diaries, Annie gets a job as a nanny. Annie Braddock, played by Scarlett Johansson, is a recent college graduate who is unsure what to do with her life after graduation.
After Annie rescues a young boy in a New York park, the boy’s wealthy mother, Mrs. X, mistakenly hears her name as “Nanny.” Mrs. X then hires Annie to care for her son, Grayer, and Annie moves into the family’s apartment for the job.
The position exposes Annie to the pressures and contradictions of life among Manhattan’s wealthy families. She must manage Grayer’s demanding schedule while dealing with Mrs. X’s controlling behavior and Mr. X’s frequent absence. Annie initially tells her own mother that she has taken a job at a bank, hiding the truth about her unusual new career.
The film is based on the 2002 novel The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. A common mix-up is that Annie is not hired as a bank employee or a personal assistant; nanny is her actual occupation in the story.
