What document lists the contents of a shipment?

The story behind the answer

A packing list is the document that lists the contents of a shipment.

It records the physical details of cargo, commonly including item descriptions, quantities, package numbers, weights, dimensions, and shipping marks. Exporters usually prepare it after the goods have been packed, so the document reflects how the shipment is actually arranged.

A packing list is not the same as an invoice. An invoice focuses on prices, values, payment terms, and the transaction between buyer and seller. A bill of lading serves as a transport document and receipt, while a purchase order records what the buyer requested before fulfillment. These documents often travel together but answer different questions.

Warehouses use the list to check receipts and locate goods, carriers use package information for handling and freight planning, and customs officials may use it to understand the cargo without opening every package. Differences between the packing list, invoice, and transport document can delay delivery or customs clearance.
