What do the letters VT stand for in the Lamborghini Diablo VT?

The story behind the answer

The letters VT in the Lamborghini Diablo VT stand for “Viscous Traction.” The name refers to the viscous-coupling system that allowed the Diablo to send drive to the front wheels when the rear axle began to lose grip.

Introduced in 1993, the Diablo VT was Lamborghini’s first production all-wheel-drive sports car. Under normal conditions it retained a rear-wheel-drive character, but its computer-controlled system could direct as much as 25 percent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels. This improved stability and traction without making the car feel permanently front-driven.

The system was particularly valuable in a high-powered mid-engine V12 car, where sudden throttle inputs could overwhelm the rear tyres. The viscous coupling responded to differences in rotational speed between the axles, helping the Diablo maintain composure on slippery or uneven surfaces.

VT is sometimes misread as “Variable Torque” or assumed to describe the engine. It actually names the traction system. The Diablo VT remained a rear mid-engine car, and later versions included both coupé and roadster body styles, along with more powerful updates such as the VT 6.0.
