Austria’s Stefan Kraft set the ski-flying world record at 253.5 metres in 2017.
Kraft achieved the jump on 18 March 2017 at Vikersundbakken in Vikersund, Norway, during the Raw Air tournament. His distance surpassed the previous men’s record of 253 metres, set by Norway’s Anders Fannemel at the same venue in 2015.
Ski flying is a larger and faster form of ski jumping. Competitors use specially designed hills that allow them to travel much farther than on a standard large hill. The result is measured from the take-off point to the nearest point where the jumper touches the landing slope.
Kraft’s mark is sometimes confused with the longest jump ever made in a competition or with women’s records, which are tracked separately. Vikersund has hosted many of the sport’s longest jumps because its hill is specifically built for extreme distances.
