What did the dove bring back to Noah’s Ark as proof that the Flood waters were receding?

The story behind the answer

The dove brought an olive leaf back to Noah’s Ark as proof that the Flood waters were receding.

Genesis 8:11 says the dove returned in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf. Noah understood this as evidence that the waters had diminished from the earth and that vegetation was again visible above the flooded landscape.

The olive leaf became one of the most enduring symbols associated with Noah’s Ark. In later art, literature, and public imagery, it commonly represents peace, renewal, reconciliation, and the return of life after catastrophe.

The dove did not immediately remain outside. Noah sent it out again after waiting another seven days, and it did not return. Genesis then describes Noah removing the Ark’s covering and seeing that the ground had dried.
