According to Genesis, what was Noah’s Ark’s opening called?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark had a window as its opening.

Genesis 6:16 lists a window among the ark’s structural features, alongside its door and three levels. The passage tells Noah to make the window and finish the ark in a specified way, although English translations differ slightly in how they describe the exact form and placement of this feature.

The window becomes important later in the story. After the waters had covered the earth, Noah opened the window and sent out a raven. He then sent a dove repeatedly to test whether the floodwaters had receded. The dove’s return with an olive leaf is a separate event from the window’s construction, so the two details are often connected in retellings but are not the same answer.

The Genesis account does not provide a modern architectural drawing. Its measurements, compartments, door, window, and decks are narrative details rather than a complete technical blueprint. Later artistic depictions therefore vary considerably.
