The Animus is the device that lets people relive ancestral memories in the Assassin’s Creed series.
In the franchise’s modern-day story, the Animus uses genetic memories carried through a person’s ancestry. A user enters the machine and experiences the life of a historical ancestor, allowing the player to explore events in settings such as Renaissance Italy, the Caribbean, Egypt, and Viking-era England.
The device is central to the series’ structure because it connects modern characters with historical protagonists. Desmond Miles uses it to experience the memories of Altaïr, Ezio, and Connor, while later games introduce other users and Animus systems.
The Apple of Eden is a powerful Isu artifact, not the memory machine. The Bleeding Effect is a consequence of repeated Animus exposure, and the Observatory is a location and device in Black Flag. These terms belong to the same mythology but have different functions.
