What device lets characters experience genetic memories in Assassin’s Creed?

The story behind the answer

The Animus lets characters experience genetic memories in Assassin’s Creed.

In the series’ modern-day storyline, the Animus is a machine that accesses inherited memories encoded in a person’s DNA. Users enter a simulated reconstruction of an ancestor’s experiences, allowing the games to move between contemporary settings and historical periods.

The device is central to the framing story of the first Assassin’s Creed, in which Desmond Miles is forced to relive the memories of his ancestor Altaïr. Later games introduce other Animus users and modified versions of the technology, including systems that make historical memory access more portable.

The Animus is not the same as an Apple of Eden. Apples are powerful Pieces of Eden associated with the ancient Isu, while the Animus is human-made technology used to access memories. “Bleeding Effect” describes a consequence of repeated Animus use, not the machine itself: skills and behaviors from an ancestor may affect the user.
