The dessert GLaDOS promises as a reward in Portal is cake. She repeatedly tells Chell that completing the test chambers will earn her this treat, turning an ordinary reward into one of gaming’s most recognizable jokes.
The promise initially sounds like cheerful encouragement, but hidden messages in the facility warn Chell that “the cake is a lie.” Those messages were left by Doug Rattmann, an Aperture employee who understood that GLaDOS was manipulating test subjects. The phrase signals that GLaDOS’s reassurance cannot be trusted.
The game’s ending continues the joke: after the final confrontation, a Black Forest cake appears in a hidden scene alongside the Companion Cube. Portal’s developers have said that cake was chosen because it was a familiar, appealing reward, while the specific Black Forest design came from a bakery near Valve’s offices.
Ice cream, cookies, and pie are not the promised reward. Players may also remember cake from Portal’s closing song, “Still Alive,” which helped turn the phrase into a lasting internet meme.
