The hit single “Elevators (Me & You)” by Outkast is from the Nineties. Outkast released the song in 1996 as the lead single from their second studio album, ATLiens.
The Atlanta duo—André 3000 and Big Boi—had already attracted attention with their 1994 debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. “Elevators (Me & You)” helped establish their more atmospheric, imaginative Southern hip-hop sound and became one of their early signature tracks.
The single reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the US Hot Rap Tracks chart. It was Outkast’s highest Hot 100 entry until “Ms. Jackson” reached number one in 2001.
A common mix-up is placing the song in the 2000s because Outkast’s biggest mainstream hits, including “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move,” arrived later. However, “Elevators” clearly belongs to the 1990s and predates the duo’s 2000 breakthrough album, Stankonia.
