What date is International Day of the Nacho?

The story behind the answer

International Day of the Nacho is observed on October 21. It is an informal food observance associated especially with Mexico and the United States, rather than an official United Nations international day.

The date connects naturally with nachos’ Mexican origin. Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya created the dish in 1943 at the Victory Club restaurant in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, a border city across from Eagle Pass, Texas. Piedras Negras has celebrated the dish with nacho-themed events around this date, helping reinforce October 21 as the international observance.

October 21 is distinct from November 6, often listed as National Nacho Day in the United States. Neither date marks the invention of nachos, which occurred in 1943. The observance is also separate from Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day, two dates that are frequently—and incorrectly—selected as general celebrations of Mexican food.
