Aslan is a lion in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.
Aslan is the great lion who appears throughout the Narnia books. He is the creator and sovereign of Narnia, and his presence usually signals the story’s deepest moral and spiritual concerns. Lewis described Aslan as a fictional representation of Jesus Christ, while also making him a distinct character within the fantasy world.
The best-known Aslan story is in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, where he gives his life to save Edmund Pevensie and then returns to life. His death and resurrection are presented through Narnian laws and imagery rather than as a direct retelling of the New Testament.
The character is sometimes mistaken for a purely allegorical figure, but Aslan also functions as an active ruler, guide, creator, and friend. The Turkish word “aslan,” meaning lion, helped inspire Lewis’s choice of name.
